I use Linux's /proc/stat to read CPU load, and
then a extremely simple C
library ("parapin") in XS coupled to a perl script (I do better with perl
than C) to turn the lines on and off.
Sort of in this vein, I wrote a cron job to dump the load average to my
Apple Network Server 500's LCD screen so I can just glance at the LCD and
see what the system load is, updated once a minute.
