They had vinyl records with Basic distributions on
them. Apparently
floppy disks was hard to come by in East Germany, so vinyl was used
instead.
In the easrly 1980s, some UK home computer magazines (for machines like
the Spectrum) came with flexile audio records (you played them on a normal
record player, at, I think 33+1/3 rpm) contianing programs for
whatever machine the magazine covered.
