Without 32-bit addressing enabled, the MacOS can only access 8 MB RAM.

Ah, bollocks, I thought I had solved that by using a IIci, which is 32-bit
clean.
You need to switch from 24-bit to 32-bit addressing in
the Memory control
panel.
I see now that it was turned to 24-bit, right. The 4-meggers have found a
new home now, though. =)
