I don't know what equipment was used where you went, but a family
friend had one of those setups when I was a kid (c. 1979). His was,
IIRC, attached to his Ohio Scientific Challenger III (that was trashed
when he loaned it to a local youth group for a fundraiser :-( ).
My friend used to make calendars on cloth and T-shirts, mostly. I
don't think he had the coffee mug rig.
I think Apple IIs were also commonly used for this sort of commercial
activity.

I saw one at our local mall about 25 years ago that was based on a Data
General Nova. It wasn't working at the time. I got a free t-shirt for
plugging the disk terminator back on.
