I certainly used to have all sorts of trouble with drivers (and
different OSes). As Lyle says, keep it simple at first and get a link
running between two machines with the minimum of hardware in the middle
before adding more stuff.
ISTR finding that 5 or 6 years ago software for the Madge PCI cards
tended to be the least troublesome (just a shame that the Linux driver
was proprietary back then; maybe it isn't these days)
