See my reply to Roger. Most briefly, because I believe such choices
hold back the state of the art, and thus harm society as a whole - at
which point it becomes a moral issue.
Not to denigrate the work that Dave has done, but it isn't "state of the
art"---it's just programming the floppy controller to read different format
disks and store the resulting data into a neutral format.
No, state of the art is Google, what with their Google File System and
their Map/Reduce engine, none of which is available (some information yes,
but not actual code).
