Actually, LANTronix makes exactly what you describe, and it can be programmed as either a
print server or a telnet-to-RS232 device. I'm using one in my LAN right now.
The idea is to use it to put some of my old computers
on the network
by plugging it into their console serial ports.
Gad, you're reading my mind. That's exactly what I use mine for. It ties into a
code-operated 16-port switch. I simply telnet to the device, enter the code for the port I
want to connect to, and viola! Instant console hardline.
What you want is the LANTronix MSS-1 or MSS-100. Either one will do the trick, and
they're remarkably easy to configure. I've seen them turn up on E-pay quite
often.
