I met Eldridge Cleaver twice. When he was organizing the Black Panthers
at Merritt College, and then again, when he was scavenging recyclables for
a living. He ASKED me whether he could have the cans from the box on my
curb. He explained that he was having a "major battle" with the city; the
city claimed that recyclables at the curb belonged to the city, and that
individual collectors were "poaching". So, I put a box at the curb
explicitly labelled "Anybody EXCEPT the city".
