The Unimat (it's still being made) is a nice machine, but IMHO a little

i really dread continuing this off topic discussion, but american science and
surplus (
sciplus.com) sells the unimat 1 for $300. is it any good?
Not in my opinion, they're a clever design but they're too small to make
anything other than pins and such and much too flimsy to make accurate
cuts. Weight & mass = stiffness = accurate cuts in a machine tool. You're
much better off to find an old 6" lathe like a Logan, Atlas or a South
Bend. I have a 12" lathe made in Mexico of all places but it's strong as
hell! Even the chip tray is solid cast iron.
