Analog modem emulator?

   Just
curious...has there ever been a device available to anyone's 
 knowledge that functions like an analog phone line and   allows transmission via
TCPIP? 
Get an old phone system with analog station cards (for POTS phones) and
stick a system with a modem on one extension with it set to autoanswer
and call it with a modem from another extension.
