CSS---all he needed to do (or anyone needs to do) is make a bit-for-bit
copy of the DVD in question and it will play in any DVD player as a
normal DVD.
That would have been even more difficult than breaking CSS, because the
DVD-ROM drives will NOT give you all of the encrypted data unless you
successfully authenticate. They will simply return errors (and no data)
for some (but perhaps not all) of the encrypted blocks. I don't recall
whether reading the encrypted data requires just the negotiation for the
disc key, or whether the title key is involved as well.
