It may not be entirely correct, but the best do-it-yourself guide I've
ever run into was an old NOrtronics one:

Maybe that will help a bit. The audio tape forums typically also have
their own guides, as re-lapping audio tape heads is pretty common there.
I wonder if the same applies to old videotape equipment as well.
