I've got a Smith-Corona PWP-7000LT word processor that resembles the
HP110 in size and general appearance. It uses lead-acid batteries
also, but has a backlight to the LCD screen, for all the good it
does.
BTW, the battery still holds a charge after more than 20 years. Try
that with your lithium-ion battery.
A nickel-iron battery would be even better, but I'm not aware of any
portable device with one.
