Mercury
delay?
That would be cool, but I think schools might have a problem with that these
days.
"Won't someone think of the CHILDREN!?"
One needn't actually DRINK the mercury (or even hold it in one's hand) in
order to demonstrate, or even look at, a mercury delay line. I'm willing to
bet that most of those schools have mercury-switch thermostats everywhere.
Every school I attended did.
Surprisingly, most everything was digital or too simple to contain
mercury at any I went to. Any mercury spill would've been taken seriously. Chemistry
labs still had some
mercury thermometers though, but as expected they were generally avoided. I suppose a
building that was just finished before I went to it isn't a very good
example though...Some of the other buildings were fairly old though. The
expanded and renovated building dating back to the late 1800s was 98%
newer than that, however.
The school even let the kids have x-acto knives and other DANGEROUS TOOLS!
I mean, it was a high school, but I'd still expect someone to go
completely "think of the children!" on everyone. Someone got the
orchestra programme to stop using a church for performances so it's
remarkable we could use such dangerous tools!
