Can modern processors be single-stepped?
Peace... Sridhar
Hi
One could somehow jam a halt instruction onto the bus
and have it sit idle.
Then, what bus would one jam it on. The processor
is running from instide cache so you can't observe that
without some software interrupt of something. Most
processors have a pipe as well. This means that it isn't
even running the same instructions as where in the program.
The instructions have been split into different parts
of the chip and may not even be in the original order.
It would be tough even getting onto one of the high
speed memory busses.
The sense of what a front panel does doesn't have
exactly the same meaning as it used to.
