At various times in my life, I've worked with systems whose
documentation radix was variously decimal, octal and hex (and octal
and hex at the same time in the same company). Talking about 60 bit
words divided into 15-bit parcels makes sense in octal; 64-bit words
make plenty of sense in hexidecimal, particularly if they're 8-bit
byte oriented.
It's kind of like musical notation--if you learn to read all clefs
and can handle common transpositions without actively thinking about
it, then there are many fewer surprises in store.
