Now, you're making me feel really old. PKZIP
was pretty much the de-facto file compression
utility for DOS/Windows for at least a decade.
The company's still around, even though Phil's
been gone for 14 years now. (PKWare).
Can it really be that long? I went to middle
school with Phil. I once borrowed his copy of the
book version of Yellow Submarine from him for art
class. I painted the submarine in acrylics. My
mom still has it. It's proven difficult to recover.
I corresponded with him many years later on
Exec-PC, the monster BBS, where I led the
PC-Hardware forum. I remember watching all the
flak flying when Seaware sued him over PKArc and
PKXArc. Their claim was ridiculous and had no
technical merit, but Phil ran out of money and
lawyers before they ran out of money and lawyers.
These days, who the heck has ever heard or
Seaware, seller of ARC tools? Almost no one.
PKZip? For a long time, it was everywhere. I
still have it and use it on occasion.
