Correct, that is why we all wrote and/or installed our own handlers
that did dual-ring buffering, better handshaking and, if needed,
custom line speeds and/or protocols.
Joe Campbell's "C Programmer's Guide to

has plenty of good info, although he and I didn't completely
agree about his level of "data hiding".
