Some of us do the opposite of using a variac to
reform
caps - we use a variac to stress-test the components
at above the rated voltage.
If they blow up now, that's better than them blowing
up later.
We always called this "margining".
I have started doing that as well. And for some of my radio stuff, I
have been decreasing the B+ by a around ten percent. Most radios do
not care about the slight decrease, and it does give just a hair more
safety margin.
