They're forcing tablet behavior in an environment that is decidedly
optimized for exactly NOT that kind of interface.
Apple did a lot of the same with Lion/Mountain Lion...right now it seems to
be a trend in the consumer market
Trying to ride on the coattails of the iPad, or telling people how to work?
Both are popular these days. I tolerate neither.
I dumped OS X (in part) because of that crap. And the eleven people
running Windows 8 aren't happy about it either. (so Microsoft is bringing the
"start" button back, so they'll once again be able to shut down their
systems! ;))

myself scrunched in front of a 10" tablet with my SpaceNavigator
and a mouse jacked into it make my head want to explode. :)
What about a 36" tablet? There is absolutely no reason why not.
