If the Volume is going to be changed at the amplifier, then the alterations
need to be done at the amplifier.
If you are going to keep the amplifier at a fixed gain, then the alterations
can be done at the input.
The "problem" with the latter is dynamic range. Hard to have a perfect amp
that can deal with outputs from a "whisper" to pumping out kilowatts.
