It has occured
to me that I really should be wearing a respirator
of some kind. Hantavirus is nothing to laugh at.
I don't think Hantavirus is a real risk unless your equipment was
stored in the desert southwest.
Hantavirus is a *bigger* risk in the US Southwest, but SNV (the aetiologic
agent) occurs anywhere the deer mouse does, which is everywhere in the US
except for the Gulf coast. Besides, mouse turd isn't the only thing you're
inhaling. Using at least a P95 or N95 respirator when cleaning out nasty junk
is just good sense, and they don't cost much. The only people I would not
recommend use one are people with preexisting structural lung disease;
otherwise it's good insurance for little cost against what risk there might be.
