My NEC 9" disks where really high performance equipment for that time.
(Ca. 1986, 1 GB capacity.) They use a quite high acceleration to move
the heads. That is the reason for the movement.
Heck why stop at 9"?

Yes. One disk is 40 kg and needs 250 W to 300 W of power when idle.
