To be accurate, the 6522 is a 6500-family chip. But I take your point
and also observe that it depends on the chip. Interfacing an 8237 to a
6800 or a 6828 to an Intel CPU is not something I'd relish.
To their credit, Motorola did come up with the MOTEL interface thing,
which probably contributed much toward the use of the 146818 clock chip
on the PC AT.
