The funny thing is you almost never know when a item
will
be declared *Get rid of it by Yesterday*. Here in Alberta,
Canada it is local law is you have to recycle the stuff so it does
not go into the dumpster. Lead in solder I guess.
They normally charge for e-waste around here, but they did have an e-waste
recycling "event" over the summer where people could drop stuff off and not
incur a charge for doing so - the company behind that was based in a
different state, so presumably thought they were going to make some cash if
they were willing to come all that way.
To my surprise they were happy for me to come along and look through stuff
to see if there was anything vintage for me to rescue - evidently they
thought all the value was in modern equipment. It also suggests that
"ownership" was a bit of a gray area.
