This is a "new innovation" every couple of years, but has
been around since the 1960's when the argument was keypunches
and card decks vs timesharing.
Then in the 70's it was the departmental mini
vs the terminal. Then in the 80's it was the diskless workstation
vs the PC. Then in the 90's it was the network computer vs the
PC. Then it was, well, it's pretty much the same today but
big corps like Google come in.
My favorite was the "diskless workstation" of the mid-80's,
because it was so easy to say "dickless workstation" instead!
