I wonder if "devolved" or "degraded" might better describe the change
than "matured".

Actually I disagree about "devolved" being a better description. Having
used computers for a good while now (like most of us here), I am
constantly frustrated by the fact that even though they are faster and
cheaper, they are not necessarily "better". They, for the most part,
have refused to integrate smoothly into our lives and instead remain
temperamental little beasties that have to be carefully taken care of
and handled. Anyone who can help drive them into devices that we can
spend as much time using vs maintaining IMHO is making progress. Now
the proof is in the pudding and we'll see if it lives up to the hype,
but it certainly appears to be a step in the right direction.
I wonder if Apple (the former computer company) paved the way for the
name change in the last round of negotiations it had with Apple (the
record label) as one of Apple's major arguments (hey, we're a computer
company, no one would get confused) is now officially gone.
