Another use for uncompressed archives (mainly tape backup images) is you can create a
file that contains
a directory of the contents and a offset to the file header, and have very fast access
within the tape image.
You can't do that if the image has been compressed.
You can still get that by using a format that does file level compression,
like afio. This also limits data loss in the case of corrupted bits to just
the file directly afflicted, which is why I use that format for my backups.
