The idea was that you would use a wand type scanner to
read the 2D
strips of data instead of entering the program listings by hand.
Since it was a 2D barcode, a wand type scanner would not be usable.
There were earlier 1D barcodes used for software distribution. One of
the most well-known systems was the HP 82153A Wand used for the HP-41
"calculator".
