I wasn't the OP, but I am satisfied by Eric's assertion that the
built-in coil may simply not have been strong enough. I've certainly owned many a computer monitor that had very obvious,
strong degaussing
pulses at startup, so I simply assumed the TVs I was using didn't have
one. Shoulda known better. :-)
Yes, some monitors degauss with quite a lound 'clang' (I assume it's the
shaddowmask. flexing. I've never heard a TV that does that.
