Does anyone know if Apple really manufactured the
Widget HDD (circa 1983)
used on the Lisa or did they purchase the HDA from a supplier and add to it
their electronics?
It was an Apple design, using optical track sensing.
Most of the glass has come unglued, which is why most of them are dead now.
I have more info than you ever wanted to know about it on bitsavers.
Nisha was a 20 meg follow on that never shipped.
Apple worked with Rodime for the HD20, that had an Apple floppy interface, like
the General Computer Corp Hyperdrive. The controller inside the HD20 was derived
from the work on Widget and Nisha.
There may also be a connection between Widget and the Quantum Q250 positioners. I
haven't
pulled apart a Q250 to see how similar they are. The only disk person I remember from
then was Wolfgang Derks, who I think came out of Burroughs / Rodime in Glenrothes.
