Photomultiplier tube and travelling wave tube is the norm over here in
my experience. The term "valve" is more of a function thing by analogy
with a valve controlling the flow of liquid, a thermionic valve is used
to control the flow of electrons. OK, so a crt controls the flow of
electrons, but it's primary funtion is to display the result, in fact you
could argue that a crt contains a valve :-)
