Hater... ;)
I would love for a decent maker community to form in NYC, near where I
live, but it just is not so. When I take my stock of parts on the
hamfest circuit, Boston and DC *clearly* show where the (mostly) young
folks making cool stuff are.
My involvement with the radio station brings me into contact with
quite a lot of NYC's finest weirdos and people living on the fringe,
and in general, tech they are not.
