I think that's a good point. No sense in teaching him RPG and
Autocoder that he'll never use again. Recall, that during the CP/M
tenure, PL/I was pushed by DRI as the language of the future.
Try to find a job that requires PL/I expertise today.
Similarly, on the hardware end, you may want to start off with an
FPGA development board or perhaps one of the microcontroller kits.
