Not sure about single-user
mode, but normally, NeXT machines use
nis/yp
for authentication, so the fact that the /etc/passwd file was updated
isn't all that helpful.
The nidump and niload commands might be of interest to you in
understanding this. Also, there are other tables besides passwd
stored
in nis.
