The person giving them away knows they have resale value, that is why he
said not for resale. Stock machines can be worth a few hundred dollars, some
people just don't have the time and don't want to bother packing and
shipping heavy bulky items that may end up getting damaged in shipping (this
is also the busiest time of year to stand in a post office line).
As far as not being able to afford something, you can always trade for
things you already have and want less.
I wouldn't mind an A1000 since it is the only desktop Amiga I never had or
used, too bad I am not local.

The C128, A1000 and A3000 are worth real money and you
should consider
sticking
them on ebay or at least charging a nominal sum so they find a good home.
I
would certainly pay a few hundred pounds for an A3000 that was either
working
or trivially repaired with the contents of my spares pile.
It's be better given away. Don't forget that empathy does actually exist,
and should be valued more than money ;)
Espacially, when someone wanted to have something since childhood, and yet
even as an adult, he can't afford it. 'It' being not something luxury .
