of hooking the video directly to the TV like I did before, I hooked it

to a photo of what displayed on the TV. It wasn't too easy to read,
but it is clearly some kind of ASCII character dump. No clue what's
going on. Do I need to invest in a proper old-style modulator like
they used on the Atari 2600 that will "split" the A/V signal from a
single RCA cable and then put it on channel 3?
In what way do you think that that differes from what you are now using?
Per the website, [

to be the case...
Here's the output I do have. What the heck is my machine doing?

It's creating a video signal and dsiplaying it.
While a different modulation path might make the signal sharper, it is NOT
going to change what is in the video RAM.
You might want to ignore the imperfections of the video display and
concentrate on getting the computer to have more appropirate content in
what it is trying to display.
(I believe that it should be giving you a small non-obvious menu of
choices)
