On the logic analyzer suggestion: I remember seeing a
logic analyzer hooked to a PDP-11 at DEC, for software debugging. As I recall, it was
connected at the console front panel, which seems reasonable since several key CPU data
paths are exposed there.
Ooh, I like that suggestion! It might be worth making up some inline cables for the LA
just for this purpose, so it could be a quick hookup whenever needed.
