From my experience, the exact type of belt in this kind
of application matters very little. In the past, I've simply used whatever type of
belt was handy - scavenged from other electronic gear (VCR's, mostly), or even similar
belt-like objects, such as O rings. Actual rubber bands work poorly, as they stretch too
much, but anything belt-like usually functions. Lego Technics used to come with these
somewhat stretchy round colored belts in various sizes intended to work with the Lego
pulleys - they, too, will work.
Remember. This is a cassette tape machine. A very cheap one at that. It's made of
simple stamped metal. It is not a precision device. If you have a local electronics store
or repair shop of any kind, they should have an assortment of belts in various sizes, it
should not be at all hard to find an acceptable substitute. If you have to order belts,
simply figure out the size (by threading up string or wire, then measuring how much you
need), and select a diameter belt that will fit on the pulleys. It will work.
