How many transistors in the 6502 processor?

transistors  44 mm^2  
 I thought this was an interesting coincidence... the 68K transistor
 count I mean. 
Tradition holds that the 68,000-transistor count gave the chip its name.
Someone here can confirm or deny, perhaps?
