On the subject of old 3.5" hard disks--many of
the early ones
had miserable reliability....
I used to collect Apricot machines, the single biggest problem I had with
those was the 3.5" Rodime hard drives they used.
When you got a good one they were solid as a rock, but most of the ones I
came across were "flaky" at best....
....In particular, some of the early Conner drives
would simply
begin showing rapidly progressing media errors until they were
practically unusable.
ISTR one batch of early Conner IDE drives where they'd painted the arm
carrying the r/w heads. After a while the paint started flaking off, and,
well you do the math.... :-)
