I once wrote a turbopascal program that used the
parallel port and it's=20
control lines to transmit and receive a 128 bit synchronously 300 baud=20
signal to a care phone (not a car phone, it was a home alarm for elderly=20
people). So the parallel port can be used as a modem.

Being pedantic about it, it appears you were bit-banging serial I/O over
lines of the IBM printer interface, in which case I think it becomes a
serial port :-).
No sane person callse the CoCo printer/modem port a parallel interface
for all it's driven by lines on a 6821, do they?
