controllers, so that may be an option.
However, the drives I want to archive are not from a PC system, but
have the ST-506 electrical interface.
You might actually find it EASIER to bring up the correct machine.
PC controllers are NOT very versatile. XT ones are ROM based, and can't
even handle 0 V 1 based sector numbering! AT ones are better, but still
not very configuarable.
DiscFerrett should be able to read them!
