These day, you have to be specialized. There is little in the market for
"jack of all trades" EEs. Those days are gone, except in very small
companies doing fairly simple devices.
Sadly this is true in computing as well. I don't have a degree, the only
college I went to was a technical college, one day a week sponsored by the
company I was working for as an apprentice (Ferranti, may they rest in
peace).
What happened to Ferranti? We used to use one of their RADARs on the
system that I worked on but I haven't heard anything about them since the
program was cancelled.
FWIW I used to be like you but I get feed up with being stuck in low
paying jobs while the educated idiots made twice as much money as I did but
couldn't do the work and I had to do my job and theirs too. I finally went
back to college and got a degree (two actually). My salary tripled after
that. I hate to say it but it was probably the best thing that I ever did
career wise.
