I'd completely forgotten the 1401 could do instruction chaining. Now
I'm going to have to go find my instruction card or something to jog my
memory as to how and where that was done. :-)
IIRC, the 1401 instruction lengths varied only in increments of 6 (or 7
or 8) bits, depending on whether one counts the word mark and/or parity
bit as part of each instruction character.
