I know, since I'm one of the software engineers that developed firmware
for such products. I can't claim knowledge of what John meant by "just
work", but those of us that designed the things don't consider them to
just work", and neither do our customers.
If you
want to be super-anal about it you can find fault with any product,
even something as simple as a toothpick.
I'm not finding fault in anything. I think John had a legitimate
point that there would be a market for such a thing that "just worked",
and it would be a much bigger market than the stuff that you can
actually buy now. Unfortunately, I think it's impossible.
