I'm sure you're right, but when it's a
generic old PC box - the sort
of thing you rejected when I offered you one - or an old Mac with zero
collectability value which I'm going to give away anyway, then it's
more likely that some moving part - a hard disk, or a vital cooling
fan - will die first.
These are not bits for valuable or particularly interesting machines.
I treat those with a little more respect. These are cheap COTS parts
for decade-old cheap COTS computers.
I'm much like you apparently when it comes to keeping old parts. I tend to keep parts
as they are convenient. Some in tubes, some in anti static bags, an sometimes thrown in a
box. If they were particularly rare I'd keep some parts with more care but in my
experience the parts that I have are fairly likely to work just fine regardless. I know,
I'm a charlatan. :)
