Do any of y'all have suggestions?
As an alternative to what you've suggested, I've had some success with
local Facebook groups (vile though the UI is for such things) when it comes
to acquiring old PC hardware - generally the inhabitants of such groups
consider a "vintage computer" to be a P3-based machine running Windows XP
(i.e. not the 8-bit monsters or Unix systems that I'm more interested in),
but I have acquired a few freebie ISA-era PC bits and pieces that way.
I can understand you not wanting to spend money on something unless it's
[vaguely] interesting, but if the cost is $0 then maybe it's a worthwhile
route (unless space really is at a premium).
Craigslist might be another option; I've never tried (but really should)
If you really do want to spend money on a "brand", though, then I'd suggest
going with a Compaq - either a '386 or '486. They seem to be good,
reliable, solid machines, and I expect in decades to come they'll still be
remembered, unlike the cheaper junk that saturated the market back then.
cheers
