I get the impression that two-node 10Bt networking can be done with
nothing but a crossover cable. (IE the chaining connection on hubs is

Yup. Normal ethernet cable is straight thru - data pins are 1/2, 3/6
(those are pairs). To get a crossover cable, 1->3, 2->6, 3->1, 6->2 on
each end. The numbering is done like this (looking at the plug as if we
were the jack the plug is about to go into:
