We have a security system that phones home with our Wide Open West VOIP
system just fine. It probably depends on the quality of the modem and/or
baud.
I have an IT friend who did some experimentation with this as he has VOIP at
home but still needs to be able to dial in to some server management cards
on POTS in case the inter-tubes go down. He could get a carrier reliably but
only at 9600 kbps, which is fine for a basic terminal session I guess.
